Daruma Makimono
A painting of Daruma by Shorin, an art name used by Kano
Enshin (1828 - 1888), who came to Edo at age nineteen to
study under Kano Shosenin at the Kobikicho Kano studio. He
painted Buddhist themes in a reformed Kano manner and was
prominent in re-establishing Japanese painting during the
Meiji period, at which time the influence of western style
painting was being felt. He worked to found the Tokyo School
of Fine Arts, which finally opened in 1889, the year after
his death.
